The 54th Annual Saratoga Springs Flag Day Parade will be on Saturday, June 10th, 2023 from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. The founder of Roohan Realty, the late John T. Roohan, started the company’s involvement in the parade over 34 years ago by placing American flags in the ground along the parade path. All of the Roohan family members, staff and agents joined in on the parade and walked alongside the company moving truck. Today, we carry on the tradition by handing out commemorative flags to the parade-goers to celebrate the adoption of our American flag.

Everyone knows the American flag as it is now with its 50 white stars and 13 red and white stripes. But, the American flag didn’t start out that way, in fact, our flag went through 27 different versions before it became the one we know and love today. Betsy Ross, an American upholsterer, was credited with making the first American flag in May 1776 that had 13 white stars arranged in a circle and 13 alternating red and white stripes. In July, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud for the first time at Independence Hall. Just less than one year later on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the national flag.

Fun fact: Hawaii was the last to join the United States becoming the 50th star on the flag, while the 13 stripes remained representing the 13 original colonies that founded the Unites States.

Flag Day was celebrated for a long time before it became an official observed holiday in 1949. Several different towns in the U.S. claim they held the first celebration of flag day as both President Wilson, 1916, and President Coolidge, 1927, issued proclamations asking for June 14th to be the official observed date for Flag Day. However, it wasn’t until President Harry Truman that Congress approved the observed holiday into law. We hope to see our entire Saratoga Springs community this weekend for an early celebration of Flag Day!
