Women-Led Build-A-Thon For Local Housing Charities
Saturday, October 8 During the 2022 Saratoga Showcase of Homes
The 2022 Saratoga Showcase of Homes will feature a first-of-its-kind, student “Women in Trades” shed build-a-thon on Saturday, October 8 from 10AM – 3PM at the Kodiak Construction Showcase Home (#4) in Mulberry Estates II. SEE THE MAP
9th and 10th grade girls from six local schools will come together to construct six 4’ x 8’ lean-to style sheds that will be auctioned off to benefit local housing charities (Habitat For Humanity NSWW & Rebuilding Together Saratoga County) and the Workforce Development Coalition:
The construction trades present nearly limitless opportunities for students, especially given the current climate of labor shortages and overall lack of young people entering the skilled trades. Four years ago, the Saratoga Builders Association recognized the seriousness of this troubling labor trend and launched a Workforce Development Coalition to raise awareness about construction careers and reinvigorate the local workforce. Chaired by Doug Ford (VP, Sales & Purchasing) and Pam Stott (Executive Assistant), of Curtis Lumber, the group has grown to more than 25 members, including educators, builders, suppliers, and representatives from the trades industry who help local students learn about trades careers through outreach, education, and events such as this.
In case of inclement weather, the rain date for the build-a-thon will be Saturday, October 15.
In addition, a new 12’ x 18’ “Cozy Cottage” will be on display at the same location built by BOCES students. The cabin features include wood stove, kitchen nook with base cabinets, eating area at the kitchen counter, pump sink, refrigerator/freezer, electrical outlets throughout, and multiple windows for lots of natural lighting. This will also be available at auction after the Showcase of Homes event.
Over the past 25 years, the Saratoga Showcase of Homes has raised over $1.4 MILLION dollars for local housing charities. Proceeds from the event each year benefit Rebuilding Together Saratoga County and Habitat for Humanity of Northern Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties.
