Wilton, N.Y. — 8-year-old Chase Lewis of Wilton wanted to know if animals at shelters got to be with families for Thanksgiving too. When his mother told him that wasn’t always the case, he decided to step up and paw – er, pay – it forward to make a difference.

“Last year, my son asked me if all the animals at animal shelters had a Thanksgiving dinner and a family to spend it with,” said Chase’s mom, Caitlin Lewis.

“I told him unfortunately no. Shelters run off donations and the animals most likely will get their standard meal. He was very upset and decided to start a fundraiser to raise money for the local shelters to give each dog a toy and Thanksgiving! He raised $1,200! This year, he is doing the same with a goal of $2,000.”

As of Tuesday, November 17th, Chase has raised $1,285 of his $2,000 goal and enlisted the help of a few dozen individual donors, as well as Benson’s Pet Center.

Monetary donations are still being accepted and will go towards toys and delicious meals for shelter animals at:

  • Saratoga County Animal Shelter (Ballston Spa)
  • Estherville Animal Shelter (Greenfield Center)
  • Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (Saratoga Springs, Menands & Glenmont)

What do you want people to know about your fundraiser?

Chase: “I wanted people to realize that animals are the best! So if you can adopt, you should, and make a dog/cat part of your family. But if you can’t, you should donate to animal shelters.”

What inspired you to do this?

Chase: “When my mom told me that not all animals at the shelter have a Thanksgiving or can be with family, it made me very sad and I wanted to help somehow. So I wanted to make sure each pet got a fun toy and treat for Thanksgiving.”

Do you have any pets?

Chase: “I do!! We have two dogs. Casey who is 11 (hound dog), and Ella who is a beagle and 2. We adopted Ella from a shelter 2 years ago in October. She inspired me to do the fundraiser.”

What do you want people who read this to know?

Chase: “Adopt more pets! Pets can make us so happy but I think we make them happier. They are our family and family is most important. Also, make sure you give your pet a little Thanksgiving treat because we are thankful for them.”

Chase & Caitlin will also accept any physical donations you may have. If you have food or new pet toys to donate, please email or text (518) 879-5149.
