The Steampunk Yoga Opens at 517 Broadway
Studio stands out by offering unique yoga classes, numerology readings, energy sessions & more
Tucked just inside the Stewart’s-facing entrance of 517 Broadway, The Steampunk Yoga opened its doors last month after owner, Brittany Johnson, transformed the vacant commercial space into a whimsical oasis offering yoga classes, numerology readings, free workshops, energy sessions, and unique handmade accessories.
Fit for beginners and seasoned Yogis alike, Johnson’s signature “steampunk” method is a unique blend of traditional yoga poses with aerobic breathwork, meditation, music and gently woven numerology concepts (though you don’t have to know or follow numerology to participate).
What is steampunk?
Steampunk is a visual style that’s all about mixing modern technology with vintage (often Victorian-era) design aesthetics. 19th century industrial gadgets (think pipes, pumps, gears, and clocks) are signature elements of the steampunk style trend, which has made its way into art, entertainment, interior design and fashion. While the studio’s name and style are steampunk-inspired, don’t worry – you won’t be doing the downward dog in a corset top:
“I have been asked over and over if [we] wear steampunk garb to class,” admits a smiling Johnson, “the answer is no!”
Clients can wear their usual yoga/workout attire to classes (just be comfortable and bring water) but can expect a fun, focused class that’s much more than just running through the poses.
“The Steampunk Yoga is a fusion of many lineages,” Johnson explains, “I picked the ‘greatest hits’ of everything I’ve learned in this industry.”
A Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT®) accredited through Yoga Alliance® (the largest nonprofit association representing the yoga community) Johnson has taught thousands of classes throughout the country. She was formerly a full-time yoga instructor at CNY Fertility Center in Albany, NY, and launched the Troy Arts Center’s yoga program in 2010. Her yoga method is especially helpful for those suffering from stress, sleep issues, or those trying to conceive.
The Studio
The Steampunk Yoga studio is located at 517 Broadway in Saratoga Springs (entrance is the door on the Stewart’s-facing side of the building, look for signs) with a convenient customer parking lot located in the rear (accessible via Woodlawn Ave or Long Alley).
