When I joined the Board of Directors of Saratoga City Ballet in 2012, I never thought that I would be reopening and running the studio with my fellow board members. But that’s what I found myself doing last spring, right around the same time I started my career at Roohan Realty.
My daughter Katie has been taking classes with Saratoga City Ballet School and performing with Saratoga City Ballet Company for the last 6 years. She is happiest when she is on her toes and performing is her favorite thing to do!
When we found out that the lease was not being renewed and that the school faced closure we were devastated.
Luckily, my fellow board members rallied and we decided that instead of dissolving Saratoga City Ballet Company, we would look for a way to keep it going. Numbers were crunched and scenarios were discussed. It was finally agreed upon that we would find a new space and offer classes and performance opportunities all under the same non-profit entity. (Previously the School was for profit and the Company was non-profit.)
I reached out to Amy Sutton in Roohan’s Commercial Department to help find a new building. In August of 2014 we signed a lease for a perfect space on 4295 Route 50 right on the Wilton/Saratoga Springs line.
While the space was beautiful, we still had a ton of work to do to customize it for our needs. We hired a contractor, had a high quality (and very expensive!) Harlequin floor installed (the best surface to dance on). We purchased mirrors, ballet barres, sound systems and light bulbs and toilet paper…all the things needed to operate a studio! We hired an artistic director and ballet teachers. We created a new logo and revamped our website. We also had to spend an entire day moving all of our costumes, sets and props out of our old studio into storage. It took many helpers to stuff all of our belongings into two storage units.
(Fellow Roohan Realty Agent, Karan Hankinson, can attest to the sheer amount of stuff we have. I invited her to comb through our costume storage for props to stage her award-winning showcase home on Ridge View Rd—those were SCB’s gorgeous costumes displayed in the little girl’s bedroom!)
Now that the space is completed and open for business (we had our “soft” opening on October 14) we’re focusing on filling our classes and planning for the future. Sadly, Saratoga City Ballet will not be presenting a Nutcracker this year (the first time in over 20 years) but we have begun planning for our future performances.
We’re having an Open House/Grand Opening on Saturday, December 6th from 11 am – 3 pm where new students can tour our studio, meet the teachers and enter a raffle for free ballet classes.
It’s been a tremendous amount of work, but it’s all worth it when I see how happy Katie is to be back on her toes!
