A dozen eggs now cost more than a gallon of gas in many parts of the country. But inflation isn’t the main culprit here, Avian Bird Flu is.

“Egg prices are high because Avian Influenza has reduced the number of layers by almost 50 Million across the nation,” says Jennifer Thomas, of Thomas Poultry Farm in Schuylerville, NY. “The egg market is based on supply and demand. Since there aren’t enough eggs being laid to keep up with the demand, the price has gone up. We try to keep our cost down by growing our own corn.”

A fourth generation family farm, Thomas supplies eggs to all Stewart’s Shops, and for Hannaford store brand eggs (look for the P-E041 stamp). Eggs are also available directly from the farm, which is open Monday through Friday from 7AM to 1PM and Saturdays from 8AM to 2PM. While their prices change weekly (at the time of this article, their large white dozen costs $4.70 and large brown dozen $4.80), they remain more affordable than any of the store brands from local chains:

Aldi
Store Brand/Simply Nature: Start at $4.89/DZ

Hannaford
Store brand (a rep from Thomas Poultry Farm in Schuylerville confirmed that they actually supply the store brand eggs for the chain):  $5.59/DZ

Market32
Store Brand/PICS: Start from $6.19/DZ

Target
Eggland’s Best: Starting at $4.79/DZ

Walmart
Store Brand/Great Value: Start at $4.87/DZ
Hillandale Farms Medium Eggs: $2.18/DZ

While you might be able to score a deal by opting for medium-sized eggs instead of large at chain stores, those affordable items sell out fast due to high demand, leaving fewer, more “eggspensive” options like organic and cage-free, which can run in the $6-$7 range.  Fortunately, if you buy from local farms and poulterers, you’ll shell out less per dozen and probably get a fresher product. Here are some places to look in the area (list is developing, please check back for updates):

Gansevoort

  • Lori Schultz (DM her on Facebook) – she’s offering them for $2/DZ

Greenfield

Greenwich

Salem

Saratoga

  • Foxhall Drive & Lake Ave (first house on Foxhall on the corner) – sells fresh eggs and honey
  • Handsome Cock Farm – See them at the Spa City Farmers Market

Schuylerville

West Milton

  • Jasmine Dzieniszewski (DM her on Facebook) sells them for $4/DZ. She is located on Middleline Road in West Milton and can meet locally.
