487 Broadway
Saratoga Springs, NY

History of 487 Broadway – Designed by architect R. Newton Brezee, this home was built in 1885 for Davis Coleman, who resided on the second and third floors. The main floor was retail space. The influence of Henry Hobson Richardson is seen in this building, as was also seen in last week’s building at 510 Broadway. The checkerboard detail of the ornamental brick, the arches, and the terra cotta rosettes add interesting detail to the façade, which is 2 unequal bays.

In 1915, it was home to Dr. John B. Ledlie and his wife Minnie. They too lived on the second and third floors and the first floor contained Dr. Ledlie’s office suites. Dr. Ledlie enlisted in the Army at the age of 57, and at the rank of Captain served in charge of the medical corps during World War I. Dr. Ledlie practiced until his death in 1928, and Mrs. Ledlie continued to reside in 487 Broadway until her death in 1943.
In 1930, Dr. Malcolm McGovern returned to his hometown to practice medicine taking over the suite of the late Dr. Ledlie. The five room suite consisted of a reception hall, office, operating room, and patient rooms.
Today, the original 130-year-old façade of 487 Broadway remains intact. The main and second floors consist of retail and office space, and the third floor has 2 one bedroom apartments. Private parking in the rear is available for 8 cars.
