475 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY
U.S. Post Office

History of 475 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY – Built in 1910, massive bronze doors front the Beaux Arts building. James Knox Taylor was the supervising architect of the United States Treasury from 1897 – 1912 and many of his buildings are today on the National Historic Register. Marble columns adorn the facade and in 1910 the building was fronted with marble sidewalks. In its day, it was said to have the most elaborate lobby in the state.

In 1937, Guy Pene du Bois, known as the painter of modern life, was commissioned through the Works Progress Administration to paint murals for the lobby depicting Saratoga Springs in the racing season. On the east wall of the lobby, they remain today. On the left is a paddock scene and on the right features the United States Hotel in the background of the tourist crowd.

In 2015, the Saratoga Springs Post Office made history. This past Monday, August 24th, a ceremony was held at 475 Broadway naming Saratoga native, Carol Capone, the first woman Postmaster. Congratulations Carol!
