20 Circular Street, Saratoga Springs
Currently: The Batcheller Mansion Inn
Architects Charles C. Nichols and John B. Holcott of Albany designed the most photographed house in Saratoga Springs for George Sherman Batcheller. Built in 1873 and costing nearly $100,000, the design was so unique that the plans were copyrighted.
Batcheller was a lawyer, legislator, diplomat and a descendant of Roger Sherman, who signed the Declaration of Independence. Only briefly residing in this home, because President U.S. Grant offered him a position in Egypt in 1875, he also served overseas positions for 3 other Presidents. Batcheller died in 1908 and his only survivor, daughter Kate, sold the home to D. Walter Mabee in 1916 for $13,000. Mabee was Vice President of the Adirondack Trust Company.
During the 1940’s, ownership transferred and the mansion was used as a rooming house. Then from the 1950’s to 1965, it served as a retirement home. For the next eight years the property was vacant and subject to vandalism. Finally, in 1973, Eugene Turchi purchased the property and began a major restoration to preserve the original woodwork and detail. In 1986, the current owner, Bruce Levinsky, purchased the property and continued the restoration.
Today, 20 Circular Street is the Batcheller Mansion Inn, with 20 rooms, 8 fireplaces, 10 bedrooms and 10 ½ baths. Elaborate woodwork, gourmet kitchen, and 2 parlors grace this High Victorian overlooking Historic Congress Park. This property is currently offered for sale, and the price has recently been reduced to $2,200,000. View property listing information
