The Centennial Series
The city of Saratoga Springs was chartered on April 7, 1915. In celebration of our 100 years this summer, Roohan Realty brings you “The Centennial Series,” featuring the history of local properties – from origin to what we see today. Do you own a historic property or know one you’d like to see featured here? Submit an inquiry and our contributing writer will contact you.
History of 12 Fifth Avenue
Presently: Private residence
The lot was originally owned by Lewis James, VP of Saratoga Vichy, and was sold to Philip and Laura Wakely who built a stately Victorian in 1897.
In 1915’s “Centennial Sale,” the home was sold to Dr. Nicholas Powers for $6,000. Dr. Powers was a Saratoga Springs dentist, who spent 43 years serving on the Board of Education and had a particular interest in Physical Education. Upon his death in 1951, a resolution was passed stating, “much of the school system’s programs of physical education, athletic and recreational facilities were a measure due to his efforts, foresightedness and sound efforts.” The South Side Playground was built and named the Nicholas Powers Playground. The lot for this playground was bounded by 3 sides by Worth and Tremont Streets and Vanderbilt Avenue and is where the City of Saratoga Springs Rec Center stands today.
The home remained in the Powers family until 1987, when Roohan Realtor, Amy Sutton and husband, Rod, purchased the 12 Fifth Avenue to help preserve the legacy of service to this community.
