Denim is always in style—but today, on Denim Day, it carries a deeper meaning beyond fashion trends and everyday wear.
How Denim Day Began
Denim Day is a response to a 1999 Italian court case. The Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction after reasoning that, because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have assisted in removing them, which they interpreted as implying consent. The decision caused widespread international outrage and helped spark a broader movement against sexual violence. In response, Denim Day was established, encouraging people to wear denim as a visible sign of support for survivors—turning a fashion choice into a social and political statement.
Today, Denim Day continues as a global awareness effort that encourages conversation, education, and solidarity.
