Earth Day 2021: Love Where You Live
10 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day
On April 22, 1970, 20 million people took to the streets for the first Earth Day demonstration. Today, about 1 billion people in more than 190 countries come together each year to promote environmental protection through awareness and action. Whether you’re looking to learn something, get your hands dirty, or engage locally, here are 10 activities to participate in protecting our planet for Earth Day 2021.
♦ Earth Day Eve 2021: National Geographic’s Virtual Celebration ♦
This year, National Geographic is starting the party early by inviting you to join in an epic countdown to Earth Day 2021 with visually stunning performances from some of the most beautiful places in the world by AURORA, Angélique Kidjo, José González, Maggie Rogers, My Morning Jacket, Rostam, Valerie June, Willie Nelson, Yo-Yo Ma, and Ziggy Marley. The event will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 11AM, and include a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by Mayor Meg Kelly. Guests are encouraged to park in the large parking lot off Adams Road and walk across the baseball field to the ceremony location. This new, 2.8 mile long segment of the Saratoga Greenbelt Trail will stretch from the Milton town line to Route 50 at the Saratoga State Park along Geyser Road, providing greater mobility from Geyser Crest neighborhoods to Veterans Memorial Park, Saratoga Spa Sate Park, and downtown.
♦ Team Up to Clean Up with Sustainable Saratoga ♦
“We’re seeing extra plastic pollution and pandemic-related litter this year – things like masks and gloves – littering our streets and sidewalks,” explained Whitney Davis, a Sustainable Saratoga board member and co-chair of their Zero Waste Committee. “We were looking for a COVID-safe activity to both reduce the impact of the litter on the environment and raise awareness about the chronic problem of litter pollution in our local communities. This event lets us do that.”
Join the community and Sustainable Saratoga in cleaning up roadsides, parks or trails wherever it is convenient for you over the weekend of April 24-25. Participants are asked to register online and share their clean up photos with #systainablesaratoga to help track the event’s impact. For more information, visit sustainablesaratoga.com.
