Before the 1920’s, children weren’t allowed is most restaurants. Then, because of Prohibition, the hospitality industry began introducing the first printed children’s menus as a way to help offset some of the lost liquor revenue. In 1921, the Waldorf Astoria was one of the first establishments that offered children their own menu, with dishes like chicken over boiled rice, vegetables in butter, and broiled lamb chop. The invention of the McDonald’s Happy Meal in 1979 cemented the status of quick, fried foods as children’s “staples,” but menus have been slowly evolving to offer healthier and more diverse culinary options for families dining with kids. In fact, the Wishing Well was once awarded “Best Kids’ Menu in the Country” by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine.
