Home History: 1139 Middleline Road
Ballston Spa, NY 12020
Many buyers approach home buying simply as an investment: they look at a home, negotiate the contract, complete the necessary inspections and title work, then close on the property. With this approach, the history of a home is based mainly on the roof, mechanicals, and basic structure. But sometimes…there is an emotional history to a home: who built it? What was the purpose for the design? Who spent meaningful years of their lives within its walls? Every home has a history, and I’d like to tell you about one in particular: 1139 Middleline Road in Ballston Spa.
This 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom, 4,239 square foot home sits high up on a hill in the town of Milton, NY. It has had only one owner; one single family has enjoyed the memories within its walls since it was built in 1991. But the love and the history for this home begins far earlier than that – before the structure ever existed.
The original owner was a 65-year resident of the valley that Middleline Road runs through; he also ran a business there as well. He loved the area’s beautiful rolling hills, and one of his favorite places was at the top of one of these overlooks where he could see all the way to Vermont. He often hiked up this hill to relax and just take in the views. His son remembers him laying cash on the kitchen table one day in 1967 and saying that they were using that money to purchase a snowmobile to ride through this same valley and up his favorite hill to be able to enjoy that incredible view all year long.
During those times spent hiking and snowmobiling up to the hilltop, the man always dreamt of building his home up there. And eventually, that dream became a reality. One day he purchased 14 acres and built his dream home, complete with oversized windows and a wraparound deck to showcase the breathtaking panorama that had drawn the owner there for so many years. Since the family loved to celebrate holidays and life celebrations together, its design had to be conducive to large family gatherings., and the open floor plan provided this very thing. The family has since shared with me how many wonderful memories they’ve made in this home. They all agree that they’ve always felt a deep, personal connection to the house and knew that it was lovingly built not only for the view, but for the cherished memories it would help create.
After years of enjoyment, the time has come for the original family to move on. But the home’s quality construction, mesmerizing views, and warm, welcoming ambiance remain in tact for generations to come. I have been given the honor of listing this home for sale, and it was immediately apparent to me what this home has meant to its owners. Now it is time for another family to carry on the traditions that began with the dream of one man that fell in love with a view, at the top of a hill, in a lovely valley, in a town in upstate New York.
