50th Anniversary News | Saratoga Springs, NY
series by Mary Flanagan, Associate Real Estate Broker & lifelong Saratogian
2019 marks Roohan Realty’s 50th year in business! We would like to take you back to 1969 and share what was happening in the news – locally and nationally. We’ve been having a great time reading old newspapers and hope you enjoy seeing the historic Roohan Realty connections as much as we do. Community involvement and public service have been ingrained in our business from the very beginning – a commitment that continues today. Check back every Thursday for a fresh flashback to 1969!
1. Winter will be a while longer
Punxsutawney Phil does see his shadow, meaning 6 more weeks with “Old Man Winter.” The Department of Public Works reports that so far this winter, they’ve used more than 4,000 tons of sand and 1,300 tons of salt to service the city’s 110 miles of roads…compared to 2,000 tons of sand and 1,000 tons of salt used in TOTAL last year in 1968. (Please wake us when it’s above freezing…)
2. Friendly Sons of St. Patrick
The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick elect their Board of Governors to plan the 17th annual dinner, to be held on March 17th this year.
(Fast forward 50 years: The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick is going strong and many members of the Roohan Realty family attend the annual dinner each year, including Broker-Owner, J. Thomas Roohan)
3. That’s One Way to Get Promoted
Robert “Bob” Noonan, a former salesperson at J.B. White Realty (located at 100 South Broadway), is purchasing the real estate firm from his boss, Thomas “Tom” McHale. McHale says he is planning a vacation before deciding on future plans. Bon voyage!
4. If You Lie With Dogs You Will Get…Fined
The city’s accounts department is compiling a list of almost 600 dog owners with delinquent dog licenses. Licenses for spayed females and male dogs cost $2.25, but penalties for lapsed licenses can cost up to $13.50. Puppies must be licensed by the time they are 6 months old, otherwise they may be seized at any time:
5. “Thank You, Next”
Saratoga Springs may have rejected plans for a new shopping center, but another suitor has stepped up: the town of Malta. Vying for a chance to be the home of the new plaza, the town is evaluating an area at Exit 13 and Route 9 for the 140,000 sqft complex.
6. 1 Nixon, 5 Nations
President Nixon is taking a five-nation trip abroad, departing on February 23rd. He will visit Belgium, Britain, W. Germany, Italy and France:
The purpose of the trip, as described by the President, is:
“The Alliance, held together in its first two decades by a common fear, needs now the sense of cohesiveness supplied by common purpose. I am eager for an early exchange of views on all the important issues that concern us. I favor intimate and frank consultations, and I am delighted that it has proved possible to make this journey so early in my administration. I am going to discuss, not to propose; for work, not for ceremony.”
7. “We rob banks.”
Romance, robberies, and Texas Rangers are on the big screen at The Community Theater! Now playing: the biographical crime film, Bonnie and Clyde (1967), starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway:
8. House of the Week
This home takes the split level style to the next with its tall, columned portico, circular staircase, U-shaped kitchen with big bay window, bedroom balcony and 29′ long family room. Game night at this place! See the floor plan & more: House of the Week for Feb. 8, 1969
